GOLDEN OLDIES LIGHT UP THE IPL

The packed international cricket schedule means the Indian Premier League is well-suited to retired players. The big stars from the international teams have limited windows of opportunity to make an impact, so it is often down to those who have hung up their boots for their national teams to give the event global star quality.

Adam Gilchrist, Matthew Hayden and Andrew Symonds are three of Australia's limited overs stars of the last decade whose days in the Baggy Green are behind them. Each has made a big impression on the third instalment of the IPL.

Gilchrist has the best strike rate of the leading run scorers in the competition, Hayden's masterful 93 from 43 balls against Delhi Daredevils was perhaps the tournament's best innings to date and Symonds is near the top of both the run-scoring and wicket-taking charts. Australia would undoubtedly be a stronger Twenty20 team with them still in their ranks.

Sri Lankan pair Chaminda Vaas and Muttiah Muralitharan have cut back on their international commitments but are still capable of being the leading bowlers in India. Vaas' skill with the new ball against openers on the attack during the fielding restrictions has been particularly impressive.

Jacques Kallis might not have retired, although the South African selectors are learning why it was a mistake to try and ease the Proteas legend out of their T20 line-up - he scored 264 runs in his first four IPL knocks without being dismissed. There's no doubt his presence would help shorten South Africa's World Twenty20 odds next month.

Not all of the oldies have enjoyed success. Sanath Jayasuriya was exposed at the top of the Mumbai Indians' order and Damien Martyn struggled on his comeback for Rajasthan Royals

Even the Royals' skipper and coach Shane Warne is finding life difficult, an inevitable consequence of the ageing process. It will happen to the other golden oldies, but not just yet.

ANDERSON ANGRY OVER MISSING WORLD T20

Tuesday, June 15, 2010 -- England’s premier fast bowler has expressed his disappointment at not being a part of the ICC World T20 tournament winning playing eleven after missing each of the games in the tournament.

Anderson has said that he thought that being rested for the prior tour of Bangladesh meant that he was not a part of the thought process and hence missed out.
Left out and angry!

Anderson said that while one needed to congratulate the selectors for the tournament winning squad, he also said he was left seething at being left out.

He said, "But it [being left out] did take the wind out of my sails and I felt angry about being rested, because I felt that might have had something to do with it. I thought if I had gone there and gone to Abu Dhabi."

Anderson also said that he will now need to re-evaluate where he stands in England cricket. He also acknowledged that unless the side plays two spinners, he may not be a part of the starting eleven. "I now have to work my way back into the team and unless they play only one spinner I can't see me starting," he said. "I admit it has changed my thoughts on where I am in the side.

SCHIAVONE MAKES HISTORY AT FRENCH OPEN

Wednesday, June 9, 2010 -- Crowds roared in cheer as Francesca Schiavone fell to the clay tennis court at Roland Garros, after winning the French Open title for ladies’ singles.

Schiavone has forever marked tennis history for being the first ever Italian woman to ever win a Grand Slam title as well as the French Open. During the match, Schiavone played a memorable game against Sam Stosur, the Australian favorite. The memorable game against Stosur ended in a 6-4, 7-6(2) game, that included a very anxious tiebreak.

After Schiavone fell to the clay court, she stood up and embraced her opponent before moving towards the stands and disappeared among the numerous spectators who patted her back in support. Schiavone embraced every single moment of her victory after working real hard to achieve the much coveted title.

When thinking about the precarious tiebreaker, Schiavone remarked, “I was feeling much more energy, more and more and more. I couldn’t stop it. I really felt that it was my moment. I took it. I didn’t care about nothing. I wanted to take that point and play my tennis. It was the moment.”

A year ago, the same two players met each other during the first round. That time, however, Stosur won the match, and it was over for Schiavone before it even warmed up. Lessons learned and hard work after, Schiavone played hard and played smart, which allowed her to walk away with the cup and a history making achievement to boot

AFC CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW: JETS VS COLTS

Coach Rex Ryan and his Jets team will always have doubters. The ones that expected New York to go into Cincinnati and lose and the same group that were laying up to nine points on San Diego being the final stop on New York’s playoff tour.

This week Indianapolis welcomes New York in the AFC Conference Final and although some of the doubt has been erased following back-to-back playoff wins, the challenge that awaits at Lucas Oil Stadium is arguably the toughest hurdle in all of football.

Let’s break this game down and look at the pick we suggest. You can see more analysis on this game and the Vikings at Saints at www.BetRepublic.com both by watching their innovative online sports betting TV shows and on their posting boards.

Online sportsbooks have the Colts set as 7.5-point favourites with an Over/Under of 39. Books reported early action on Indianapolis when the game went up on the board, but the betting has levelled off the last couple of days. The Over/Under is a different story, as bettors liked the Under right from the opening number, bringing it down from 41 to 39.

Peyton Manning leads one of the league’s most elite offenses and for this road-weary defense it will be a step up in class. In a 20-3 win vs. Baltimore in the division finals Manning used his usual play-makers, Reggie Wayne (8-63, 1 TD) and Dallas Clark (7-59, 0 TD), for key third down situations that kept the chains moving. But it is also the supporting cast, the other five targets that Manning spread 15 passes to, that make this unit hard to defend.

Indy’s offense scored 27-plus points in the four games that preceded the controversial Week 16 loss to New York that will forever live in infamy with the Colts faithful. There hasn’t been any real evidence so far this season that an opponent can come into this building and stop the home side (again, when the starters are all in the game) from putting up some points.

New York’s D is based on a shutdown, Pro Bowl corner (Revis) that can all but eliminate his opponent’s top WR. The rest of the secondary has above-average coverage skills and the front seven can blitz with the best of them. It helped New York lead in nearly every defensive category during the regular season, but 15 out of 16 times the Jets weren’t playing this offense and in the one game where they did face Indy, it was vs. the Junior-V edition in the second half.

Jets rookie QB Mark Sanchez is going to be expected to do his part running the offense but the majority of the time that just means handing the ball to any one of his talented backs and stepping out of the way. The Indianapolis run defense gets a bad rap for not being able to defend the run but it’s actually a bit of myth. Just ask the explosive Baltimore Ravens RB trio that managed 78 yards last week on 16 carries. So far New York has rushed for 171 yard (CIN) and 169 yards (SD) but the Colts will be gameplanning for this and do have more run-stopping ability than they are given credit for.

The Colts secondary had a facelift this season and helped by the speed-rush of DEs Freeney and Mathis will be able to limit New York through the air. If the Colts can keep the run-game on a short leash and prevent big gains that are becoming common place in this year’s playoffs, it is going to result in stalled drives and a lot of time spent on the field by New York’s defensive unit. Eventually this could lead to holes in the coverage and gaps on the line that Manning and the offense will take full advantage of.

Oddsmakers, much to the chagrin of HC Ryan, opened with a line of Colts -7 and that was quickly bet up a half-point to the current line. We recommend buying that line back to the TD and going with the superior offense to finish the job at home that it started in Week 16.

FRENCH OPEN WOMEN'S SEMI FINALS BETTING

Day twelve at Roland Garros sees the Semi Final matches between the final four players left in the Women’s tournament. Who will be playing in Saturday’s final? BetRepublic.com previews both matches here:

Elena Dementieva v Francesca Schiavone Tennis Betting:

The bookmakers are having a hard time determining who will be the player that progresses to the French Open final with both PaddyPower.com and William Hill having odds of 5/6 for both Dementieva and Schiavone to win the match. It looks like it’ll be a close match, but will it be the fifth or seventeenth seed that progresses to the final?

After a relatively easy route through the tournament, Dementieva came across Nadia Petrova in the Quarter Finals. Petrova had defeated Venus Williams in round four and started the Quarter Final match with great confidence and won the first set in an injury broken sixty-two minutes. From there, however, things went downhill for the nineteenth seed as Dementieva got into her stride and won the next two sets 6-2, 6-0 to book her Semi Final place. She will need to perform like she did in those final two sets to progress to the final, but will Dementieva be able to?

Schiavone is the first Grand Slam semi finalist from Italy since the Open era began and she has claimed this feat in style. She has beaten three seeded players on route to the final four, Na Li (11) in round three, Maria Kirilenko (30) in round four and Caroline Wozniacki (3) in the Quarters. More impressive than that is the fact that bar dropping her first set of the tournament she has won the following ten sets to reach the Semi Finals. She is clearly the player in the better form of the two, but can she reach the final?

This will be the eleventh meeting of the two players, with Dementieva holding a 6-4 advantage on the scorecard. Dementieva has won the last three encounters and Schiavone’s last victory against the Russian came in 2007. Also, they have met just once on clay with Dementieva emerging victorious. Despite this I feel that Schiavone will add another victory to her previous four wins against Dementieva as her form at Roland Garros has been exceptional so far. My money will be on Francesca Schiavone to beat Elena Dementieva at odds of 5/6.

Jelena Jankovic v Samantha Stosur Tennis Betting Tips:

After beating Justine Henin and Serena Williams in the last two rounds, it is unsurprising that Samantha Stosur is the favourite with William Hill at odds of 8/13 to reach the final of the French Open. My pre-tournament favourite Jelena Jankovic is available at 6/5. Who will be right, me or the bookies?

Of the two players Jankovic has had the easier route to this point in the tournament and has only had to defeat the twenty-third and twenty-seventh seeds in rounds three and four. Unsurprisingly she has dropped just the one set on the way to the final four and that came against Kaia Kanepi in the second round.

Stosur, on the other hand, has beaten the top seed in Serena Williams in the Quarter Finals and the four time winner of the French Open in Justine Henin in round four. Henin started off the stronger of the two in their match and won the first set 6-2 in thirty-two minutes before Stosur won the next two sets 6-1, 6-4 to book her place in the last eight of the competition. Filled with confidence from beating Henin she raced off into a 6-2, 5-3 lead before Serena came back and won the second set in a tie-breaker. The final set was nip and tuck until the very end when Stosur broke Williams at 7-6 and won the match 6-2, 6-7, 8-6 in what was an epic game. Can she carry on from there and book her place in the final?

These two players have met on four previous occasions and Jankovic has won three compared to Stosur’s single win. All four matches have been played on hard courts and they have met twice this year with the score tied at 1-1, with Stosur winning the last game in Miami. None of their four matches have gone to three sets, but I feel that this one will with Stosur in the form of her life and highly confident after her last two victories. Unfortunately for her I am sticking with my original prediction of Jankovic to win the title, so I’ll be backing her at odds of 6/5 to win this match. I’ll also be putting a small bet on Jankovic to win 2-1 @ 7/2 with PaddyPower.com.

Ana Ivanovic has one Grand Slam title to her name, and even managed to achieve the No. 1 sometime in 2008. However, her recent performance has been plagued with injuries and decreased play, which caused her a certain amount of prize money and some lucrative deals.

Serena Williams is the other Williams sister who has made waves in the world of women’s tennis. In fact, she has been noted to have acquired the highest career prize money ever won by a female professional athlete so far.

Rafael Nadal, while still relatively young, already has six Grand Slam titles to his name. He has an impressive career that many tennis experts believe is just the start of a glowing career.

1 – Roger Federer [$36,000,000]
Roger Federer has accumulated a total of 15 Grand Slam titles which have been reason enough for his lucrative deals and career prize money.

BETTING PREVIEW OF INDIA V BANG AT DAMBULLA

The second game of the Asia Cup will be played between India and Bangladesh. The match like the rest of them will be played at Dambulla and will see the previous year’s runner-up take on the minnows, who have never got to the final of the tournament before this, in the game.

India has a decent batting side going for them but the problem is with their bowling. The injuries and the lack of form of some of the key fast bowlers, has meant that the side has struggled in the recent past to pick up the wickets, and that as meant that the side hasn’t had the best of the results going for them.

The batting, though stronger than most is shorn of Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh. Tendulkar has opted to rest out of the series, while Yuvraj was dropped from the tournament. Amongst the rest, the series will see the return of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, both of whom have been intermittently injured and out of form and greatly desired that break that they got after the World T20.

For Bangladesh, the story has not been too dissimilar from their last two or three years. Whilst there have been definite improvements, the side has fallen by the wayside in their middle order on more occasions than one. Over-dependence on Tamim Iqbal has made them a one-man batting army, with the likes of Shakib al Hasan and Mohammad Ashraful struggling to regain their glory days.

The track at Dambulla will need to be assessed before hand, but one gets the sense that the spinners will hold the key here. And one also gets the sense that both the sides will want to go into the side with three spinners and not more than two pace bowlers.

India are obvious favourites going into the game (2/11 at Stan James), as compared to the offer of (7/2 at Ladbrokes) for a Bangladeshi win. My money is on India, but they will do well to remember that they had lost to this very team in the 2007 World Cup.

LOW COST HEALTH INSURANCE

For people who are aged 25 or below, health coverage might not be a big issue for them since they are generally in good health and shape. But since we are at risk to diseases while we age, it is important to have a checkup to ensure that we do not have any risk for a serious disease and do so by getting low cost health insurance.

This is actually more significant in women because having a regular checkup can prevent diseases such as breast cancer.

For this reason, getting an insurance is a good decision, even if you are very healthy. Although not too many are keen on that idea since they cost a lot of money. There are health insurance companies which can offer a similar coverage to the expensive ones but at a much lower rate. Because of this, it is easier and affordable to get a health policy. But we must not abandon the fact that you can still get stung with higher premiums.

There are several factors which might cause you to incur a high premium in your insurance. This is because the insurance company has prevented you from getting a low cost health insurance. There are still some companies which consider at-risk individuals simply because they don't have an overhead rate which is high.

Here are some things which can hinder you from getting loe cost health insurance.

Diabetes type II. It used to be known as adult onset diabetes. But since there are many kids with poor eating habits, even at a young age they have already developed this diabetes type. Because of this, they become at risk for hosting several diseases which will hinder them from getting an adequate health cover by the time they will need it.

It is crucial to have a clean bill of health before you even apply for low cost health insurance, in addition, your daily habits must not have anything which could become eligible as a risk factor and will turn into a disease. Some companies will determine you a risk because you haven't been tested for things like diabetes.

The questionnaires of insurance companies often ask your drinking and smoking habits. Once you are smoking, the rate of your premium may increase. When you are applying for such insurance rates, you must point out that you do have a healthy lifestyle. Having a poor lifestyle will prevent you from getting low cost health insurance. Even if you are healthy.

HAVE YOUR MEDIGAP INSURANCE PLAN BEFORE RETIREMENT

Medigap health insurance is a must to do insurance plan for your old age. You can not relay on your retired days health as you can face some problematic diseases and maladies in these sweet but troublesome days. You have to be always alert and careful beforehand lest you can face some real tension over this issue. So it is always better to be prepared before when you have time in your hand. Medigap health insurance is for this purpose.

The first two Medigap insurance plans, A and B are the most basic plans in the policy, with Plan B offering a little more comprehensive coverage outside the U.S. Plan C includes all the basic benefits of A and B, plus nursing home options and a foreign travel emergency portion.

Plan D features everything in Plan C, with some additional at-home recovery options. Plan E in Medigap insurance continues to offer the basics, plus a few combinations of home care, foreign travel and preventative care features. Plan F focuses on excess charges and will cover the difference between the doctor bill and the Medicare portion. Plan G is similar to Plan F except only covers 80 percent of that gap.

It is however advised that you should go through the policy statements carefully before deciding to choose one best fit for you. And for the concern of the policyholders it can be said that the all the plans with the same letter cover, no matter which insurance company sells it must cover the same benefits. As for example it can be said that all Plan E policies have the same benefit coverage irrespective of the insurance company selling it. However, it should be kept in mind that the amount of premium can vary with company.

You can find out that there are lots of medical companies selling medigap and not Medicare because the latter is a government venture and the former is a private venture. All these private companies are called as medigap health insurance companies or Medicare Supplement companies. But they may be thousands in number but they have to follow some basic rules irrespective of their separate status. The regulations are something like these. They can not change the plans of the medigap policy according to their whims and requirements. The rules are more or less fixed. There is Medicare Supplement Comparison. This will tell you which will be good to choose and which should be avoided. BANK ACCOUNT TIPS FOR SENDING THE KIDS OFF TO UNIVERSITY

When you are sending your teenage son or daughter to university, there are likely to be plenty of things you will worry about. However, by making sure they have a suitable bank account in place, you may just allay some of the fears you have about how they will cope financially on their own.

A student bank account should be able to provide them with a place to better manage their money and help them to keep cash aside for important expenses like rent, fees and books. But of course, there are a large number of options available that vary between providers - and you may need to take some time with them deciding which is right for their needs. One thing you are likely to notice is that most accounts will come with a selection of tempting freebies and special offers. One of these that could prove particularly handy is the NUS Extra card, which provides the holder with discounts and deals lots of different things.

In addition to all of this, you might want to make sure your son or daughter has access to an online bank account, particularly if they are moving away from home. It is highly likely that your teenager is more than familiar with the internet, so giving them access to their finances over the web might encourage them to keep a closer eye on their incomings and outgoings. In fact, for some parents, internet banking may provide an extra level of peace of mind if they are worried bills might go unpaid or funds won't be managed properly.

Another key feature of most student bank accounts will likely be the inclusion of an overdraft. This will usually be clearly detailed and you should be able to see which will best suit your child's requirements when you compare bank accounts. However, this does not necessarily mean going for the one that has the highest limit, as this could just encourage your child to be more careless with their money. Instead, think about an overdraft that comes with an incremental limit, which will provide financial help over the course of a number of years rather than all at once.

For those who have already reached their final year of graduate study, it may be time to think about the future and how their bank account should change to reflect their circumstances. As they head out into the world to carve a career out for themselves, they may need different things than when they were a student, but very often there are graduate accounts that are designed to cater for this. There may also be a range of different overdraft, credit card and loan options available to them that can be applied for alongside the actual account.

TAX ATTORNEY

If a taxpayer finds themselves in over their head where the Internal Revenue Service is concerned, they should certainly consult a tax attorney, and the sooner the better. Fines for delinquent taxes will only increase over time and delays might even result in jail time, as well as higher legal fees.

Individuals and small business owners have learned the best way to avoid such pitfalls is to have a tax specialist's counsel to head off run-ins with the Internal Revenue Service before they begin. Tax lawyers are not accountants and are rarely involved in the process of filing taxes with the IRS but they can advise how to avoid future problems; the last thing anyone wants is the attention of the Internal Revenue Service.

Attempting to understand the ever-changing U.S. tax laws can be daunting. A tax professional will keep up with the latest changes and can advise clients accordingly and they may also be helpful when setting up trust funds, stock portfolios and the like, so a taxpayer doesn't run into unexpected surprises on April 15th. When it comes to paying taxes, it is simply a matter of pay them now or pay them later. A tax attorney will be invaluable in making sure you are represented and only pay the Internal Revenue Service exactly what you owe and nothing more.

The Internal Revenue Service is one of the most feared and powerful branches of the Government and their attitude toward taxpayers who owe taxes is never "friendly". Their job is to collect the taxes from you, and they will do whatever it takes to legally get the job done, including seizing your business and personal assets; remember, they are skilled in the fine art of intimidation. Trying to face the Internal Revenue Service alone would be foolish; you may as well attempt to perform brain surgery on yourself with a plastic knife; neither is going to have a positive outcome.

The sole purpose of the IRS agent is to prosecute you for assumed transgressions and they will not be concerned with your rights, it is up to you to protect yourself throughout this procedure. When dealing with the Internal Revenue Service it is important to make sure to have the right tax professional on your side. Look for a tax attorney with a background in both tax law and litigation, as dealing with the IRS will involve a great deal of negotiating.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM A CURRENT ACCOUNT?

Since time immemorial, banks have always been offering current accounts to its clients. This type of account has a variety of features that can meet the unique needs of every individual, but it doesn't necessarily mean that they are all similar. They have different interest rates and fees, and these all depends on the transactions you make and the features you avail.

Below are the aspects that need to be considered when you are looking for a current account fitted for you:

The instant debit feature. This feature of a current account allows its client to perform their regular transactions very conveniently and hassle-free. You do not have to visit the bank to withdraw and pay for your monthly bills and other payables. All you have to do is to make an arrangement with the bank to make automatic payments for you. This feature prevents you from missing due dates and incurring penalties due to late payments.

The current accounts fees. It is practical if you search for current accounts that bear a small fee or no fee at all. Banks usually enforce interest to current account depositors that use the overdraft facility or send money abroad.

There are banks that charge monthly fees or transaction fees and it's alright to ask what these fees are for. Do not focus on a single bank, but instead, you should look for others that offer them at a lower rate.

The interest for your money. Some banks attract clients by giving interests on current accounts provided that they don't fall below the required minimum balance. You will be charged if your account goes under the minimum that is why it is important that you always monitor your account. On the other hand, you will earn an interest if you are able to maintain your account balance.

The overdraft facility. An overdraft can happen if you miscalculated your withdrawals or expenses, which goes beyond your available balance. The overdraft facility is very useful in this case for the bank will cover the amount that you've overdrawn. The particular amount can either be paid in monthly instalments or in full.

However, the overdraft facility cannot be availed by everybody. Those who can avail of this feature are those who have a high credit score and whose income belongs to a certain bracket set by the bank.

The online banking facility. With this feature, you can monitor your account 24/7. If you want to make inquiries, you can simply reach them through their customer service hotline or via an e-mail. You may even make online transactions, such as money transfer and bills payments, right from your own home.

MAKE YOUR SAVINGS ACCOUNT WORK FOR YOU

It's always a good time to start up or investigate the benefits of an ISA. But the earlier into the new tax year you start to save money into your ISA, the harder you will see it working for you as you will earn more interest over the tax year.

If you do opt for an ISA, you might be interested in an account that offers you access to your money through online and telephone banking. With each of these, you have the ability to keep a close eye on how your savings are doing as well as being able to frequently top up your nest egg more regularly. Of course, one of the main benefits you will also see when you start an ISA is the ability to enjoy tax-free returns on your cash investment.

On April 6th 2010, the allowances for ISAs were increased for all savers over the age of sixteen. This means if you decide to put money into a cash ISA, you can do so up to a value of £5,100. For investors over the age of 18 who are willing to take a risk on the stock market, this also leaves an equal amount available to use in a stocks and shares ISA. Of course, if you do decide to put money into a stocks and shares ISA there is an element of risk involved and as market performance can mean rates go down as well as up you could get back less than you put in.

Advice was published earlier this year by Lloyds TSB that looked at just how consumers can make the most of their money. In Getting your finances fighting fit for the New Year, the bank encouraged people to consider the many benefits of savings accounts including ISAs as a way to strengthen their finances and prepare for the future. Although it was focused on people looking to get their money right at the start of the year, the message is just as relevant all year round.

Lloyds TSB focused on giving your personal finances a workout and explained that a great way to start is by creating a budget. This should consider all of your monthly incomings and outgoings, and this is something a budget calculator can also help with. Once you have built a clearer picture of how your cash is being used, you should be able to get some idea of what kind of regular savings contributions you could make. Rejuvenating your finances by getting a budget together and starting to save is one of the easiest and most rewarding things people can do so there's no time like the present to get started

CREDIT CARD BASIC INFORMATION

There are many different options when it comes to Credit Cards and it can be very confusing. Here is all the information you need on the types of credit cards and information on the requirements for these cards. The type of card you get will depend on your individual situation.

A standard or traditional card is a basic credit card which has few features and includes some of the common options.

A premium credit card has high limit and often includes features like travel insurance, emergency services and product warranties. You may also earn rewards like cash back, frequent-flier miles and more. Make sure you read the terms of service carefully to find out about any additional fees associated with these premium features and see how much you actually have to spend to earn a reward.

Affinity cards offer rewards which benefit a group or organization. A specific charity may offer a card and that charity earns a portion of revenues from the credit card. Make sure you read the small print on these cards to ensure this is the best option as opposed to getting a different credit card and donating directly to the charity.

Retail cards are credit cards that are associated with a specific retail store. Typically the salesperson will ask you if you would like to apply for the credit card, typically with a specific discount like 10 or 20% off your initial purchase with the card. Some of these retail cards allow you to use the card at other locations then where you received the card while others only work in the specific retail store you received it from.

Secured credit cards are credit cards that require a cash security deposit. The large the deposit the higher the credit card limit. These cards are often used by people who are looking to build credit because they do not have a credit history or by people that have had credit problems in the past.

The Federal Reserve offers consumer credit card agreements online via a search so you can compare credit card terms and conditions and find the card that is right for you. If you already have a credit card but have lost the agreement contact the credit card issuer, they are required to provide you with a cope upon request.

FINDING INSURANCE WHEN YOU RENT A VEHICLE

If you were building a time machine, you need only find a way of travelling back two years to find a land of plenty. Remembering how good it was almost brings tears to your eyes. Every week a bank, credit card company or finance company would mail you their latest offers. Cheap overdrafts, reduced interest with expanding credit limits or yet another way of converting that positive housing equity into cash for spending. There seemed no possibility of this coming to an end. Yet suddenly the price of gas was up to $4 and more a gallon. That proved just a passing straw in the wind. A month or so later came the bank failures, the credit crunch and a full recession with major problems of unemployment. Comfortable lives disappeared. Family budgets suddenly had to pay for debt reduction. Everyone was looking for ways to save money. Lives must go on but the problem was how to stay mobile. During the good times, towns and cities had exploded. Gone where the high density housing developments close to workplaces. In their place came suburbs and then exurbs. People were organizing their lives around private transport and expecting to commute further and further to get anything done. What do you do when you find you cannot afford to replace your current vehicles but live too far away from work, schools and convenient shops? There is no private transport so, as a first response, you are looking at constantly patching up your old vehicles to keep them moving. But small repairs become major repairs, particularly if your mileage is high or you get into a traffic accident. You look around the neighborhood for carpools. This can work for routine journeys, but it ties you to other people's timetables. That leaves renting. If you decide to drive other people around and take payment, you need to check whether your existing policy covers you. The majority of insurers believe taking money makes you a taxi business and they want a higher premium. As with all insurance, use the online search engines to find affordable cover. But, in some parts of the US, it's now economic to give up ownership. There are new rental systems allowing you to take a vehicle from a local pick-up point as and when you need it. Booking online, you only pay for the vehicle for the hours you use it. Economists have calculated the average yearly spend on car ownership is about $8,000. The average hourly rental rate is $15. That's 533 hours a year in a rental car before you pay more than an owner. But here comes the warning. The rental car always comes with cheap auto insurance, but the companies are only interested in protecting their capital. You are usually asked to pay more to top up on cover against medical expenses for your own injuries. But even with this extra premium, it's often significantly cheaper to rent as needed. Even better, you do not pick up from local offices where sales agents pitch extra options. Pick-ups and drop-offs are in local garages with no formalities. NBC'S HOCKEY POWER PLAY

When Patrick Kane scored the game-clinching goal for the Chicago Blackhawks in overtime last night, it took almost everyone on the ice a minute to realize what had happened. The puck got wedged under the interior net padding and slipped out of view, and Kane was the only one celebrating. No one lit the lamp, and the officials didn't signal for a goal.

You have to wonder whether NBC officials had the same reaction when they looked at last night's hockey ratings. Did they hesitate a moment before the numbers sank in?

Not that hockey ratings are even close to the level that other sports enjoy, but last night's deciding game in the Stanley Cup Final was a relative victory for NBC, which took a gamble on hockey back in 2004. After years of paltry showings, last night's game drew the best ratings for a Stanley Cup Final match in 36 years.

NBC Sports says Game 6 between the Blackhawks and Philadelphia Flyers scored an overnight rating of 5.8 and a 10 share. That's a 41% improvement over last year's Detroit Red Wings-Pittsburgh Penguins matchup. Sorry, Sidney Crosby.

General Electric (NYSE: GE)-owned NBC doesn't pay to broadcast NHL games; instead, it splits ad revenue with the league. That has to make last night's ratings success all the sweeter for the network.

NBC's future parent, though, probably has some mixed feelings today. Comcast (Nasdaq: CMCSA) -- which is set to take a majority interest in NBC parent company NBC Universal, pending regulatory approval -- owns Versus, which is the NHL's other leading U.S. broadcast partner, along with NBC. But Comcast also owns the Flyers. Better luck next year, guys.

Your turn, Fools: Did you watch the game? What did you think of the coverage? Do you think hockey viewership is on the upswing? Will having NBC and Versus under the same roof be a good thing for the sport? Face off in the comments box below.

VENUS WILLIAMS AT THE FRENCH , OOOG LA LA!

Bonjour! Nothing like Paris in spring, and especially nothing like the the deep red clay here at Roland Garros. The French Open is one of my favorite of the big four tournaments, as the food and flair are everywhere.

Speaking of flair, of all the four major tournaments that make up the Grand Slam, the French Open is always known as the most colorful. The Australian Open is too early in the year for a lot of new ideas, and it's still winter. The fashion industry doesn't have its first big show until a couple of months later.

The range of color and style here at Roland Garros, especially on the women's side, goes from cute to bizarre. Usually, you find the bizarre on the bodies of players known for a little shock, like Bethany Mattek. Or in this case, Aravane Rezai of France this year. Her gold lame outfit just didn't work for me, but it is clearly in step with what happens here. I'll call it a failed attempt at putting fashion together with function.

You will also find the newest in melding fashion with athletic apparel, like the feminine yet functional top worn by Maria Sharapova. Partnered with a tennis skirt of layers of chiffon, and you have feminine yet functional. Or maybe what I believe is the best women's outfit of the tournament, Jelena Jankovic's yellow tennis dress. A masterpiece, with its lightly pleated and fitted bodice with a softly layered skirt and matching tennis short, looking both classic, feminine, and professional.

Fashion and tennis have been linked since the earliest days of the game. Men wore white cotton dress shirts, ties, and poplin slacks from the beginning, with women wearing long dresses with all the trimmings of the Victorian era. Then men dropped the tie, which was controversial for then, and wore the long sleeve shirt with slacks until a man named Henri Lacoste invented the pique knit polo shirt. Now you can't walk down any street in the world without seeing one. The Lacoste alligator is the most known brand on a polo shirt in the world. Not long after, men started to wear shorts, along with the white t-shirt. Those styles continued until the beginning of open tennis. The advent of open tennis brought the game back to the popular masses, and it was not long after that the fashionistas would come calling.

By now, you all know where I am going with this. I'm sure you have all seen the latest "design" by Venus Williams. And of course, you know that I won't let Venus Williams' outfit pass without comment. I will give Venus this, she did accomplish what she apparently was aiming for: attention and shock value. She got tons of that. But she once again took the game down the wrong path.

As I said, the close relationship of tennis to fashion has always been there, but tennis is and has always been a more genteel sport, a highly professional and classic game. Born on the grass of aristocrats' lawns, the game we know today has always been more of a high society avocation. You would find it very hard to associate anything low brow or gutter snipe with anything about the game. Nurtured in the country clubs of the world, it is a game that grew with pleasantries and manners.

What other sports do you know that when you win a point by accident you are supposed to apologize to your opponent? In what other sport do you know that if you know a call is wrong, you can give the point to your opponent or correct the call in their favor? And in what other sport do you know that at the end of the game the winner runs to shake the hand of the loser and congratulate them for a well-played match? Only tennis.

Venus stated emphatically that "lace has never been done in tennis before." Well, Venus, maybe you should do your research before stating that. I will say that lace has never been done like that in tennis before. The outfit, as one reporter on French television put it, was between flamenco dancer, french maid, and mistress. I'll categorize it more like boudoir lingerie. In many of the pictures here, it looked like she was not wearing any underwear, and from most parts of the court, it was hard to tell if you could detect the flesh colored short underneath or not.

The first use of lace in an athletic way, not counting the Victorian era garb, actually started with French tennis great Suzanne Lenglen. In the roaring '20s, she shocked the world not only with her athletic and graceful style, but also her soft tennis dresses and outfits that combined lace and silk. Yes, Venus, that's in the 1920s.

Then along came famous fashion dress designer Ted Tingling, a former Wimbledon player and long-time Master of Ceremonies at the All England Lawn Tennis Club. He caused a stir in the late 1940s by putting a colored hem on a tennis dress (at that time, tennis clothing was supposed to be all white). His colored hem angered the tennis establishment so much that they banned all color on tennis dresses and clothing.

So in protest, he did the one thing that was up to this week the most famous use of lace in tennis. He designed a pair of delicate purple lace panties that Gertrude "Gorgeous Gussy" Moran wore underneath her all white outfit and that were clear to all whenever Gussy moved across the courts to hit her shots. It was a move that got Tingling removed from the Wimbledon committee for nearly three decades.

If you look at pictures of Moran's outfit today, you see maybe a perfect use of lace. Her tennis dress was feminine yet functional for the times, and the use of lace was fashion-forward for the time, yet not too risque. It was the color more then the material that was at issue.

So Venus, lace has been done in tennis before, in so many ways. Tennis is a sport, and last time I checked, the French Open was an athletic event, not a fashion show runway. In my opinion, this time she line was crossed in a big way, and not in one that is beneficial to the game nor to the reputations of the women who play it at its highest levels. This is tennis, a game played by professionals. This is not the NBA, where tattoos have become more of the uniform and fashion than the actual team uniforms that are supposed to be. One of my friends actually said that Venus' outfit would look more appropriate on Dennis Rodman than on Venus. Ouch!

Women have a hard enough time getting recognition as athletes. Unfortunately, a women's athleticism is always paired with her beauty, especially when it comes to endorsements and the trappings usually associated with world-caliber play. To this day, Anna Kournikova still makes more in tennis related endorsements then Svetlana Kuznetsova and Martina Navratilova combined, yet was never as accomplished on the court as either of them and didn't play nearly as long. That is truly a shame, as this is not true on the men's side.

The outfit is more appropriate for Playboy magazine then for the tennis court. Heck, the outfit worn by Ashley Harkleroad in Playboy was less risque, at least when she had it on. I am sure that Venus would not wear a similar regular dress to a black tie affair where she was being given a prestigious award. (I might be wrong there, given this event.) Nor would she wear it if she were to meet the Queen of England or the President of the United States. Yes, she might wear it to a nightclub, or to bed, but both of those are not athletic events. The outfit didn't enhance her game, nor did it enhance the women's game. Nor did it really advance tennis fashion.

I am not a prude, and I appreciate good fashion on both men and women. I worry about what comes next, especially given tennis. Video games have gone in just a generation from cute blips on a screen like Pacman to extremely violent like Grand Theft Auto. Music has gone from songs you could actually sing in public with stories to tell to hip-hop beats laced with profanity and vanity. Professional sports, especially the NBA, NFL, and MLB, have gone from contests of skill and class to contests of bravado and thuggery. No, this one outfit of Venus will not take tennis there, but it should start to sound the alarm. It is only a short step from an outfit like this to playing naked, honestly.

Granted, the play here in Paris has been relatively uneventful, with the exception of Jo Wilfried Tsonga's epic first round five-setter and Andy Roddick's three-set fall to Teimuraz Gabashvili. If you are French, then Gael Monfils five set loss to Fabio Fagnini in the second round was heart-wrenching. There have been plenty of good matches, but no big surprises.

So I guess you could say that the most excitement so far is Venus' outfit. No pun intended.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR FRENCH OPEN FINALISTS?

The two participants in the women's final at Roland Garros were somewhat of a surprise. Samantha Stosur was supposed to be knocked out by Justine Henin, and then she was supposed to lose to Serena Williams. Neither expectation was met. Stosur would book her place in the final, one year after faltering at the semi-final stage.

Francesca Schiavone, on the other hand, was supposed to be out of the tournament in the first week. In 39 attempts at trying to win a major title, her challenge has been halted the first or second round on 17 occasions, so one could be forgiven for expecting an early exit by the Italian.

The final itself failed to capture the imagination of some people, but Schiavone will not be bothered by that. At 29-years-old, she became the second oldest first-time Slam winner in the Open era, but what lies in store for her now.

What's Next For Francesca Schiavone?

Schiavone entered the French Open at No. 17 in the world, the same kind of position that she had occupied for a number of years. Forever fluctuating between the top 10 and 30 positions, she remained a stalwart on the WTA Tour that the big names wouldn't have been pleased to be drawn against, yet they would've known they had enough to beat the battling Italian.

It wasn't until 2007 that she finally won her first singles title, having previously been a runner-up eight times prior to her initial triumph. Since that victory, Schiavone had only gone on to win a further two titles, one of which was earlier this year on the clay in Barcelona. All three of her titles had come in tier three events, giving us no real indication that she was capable of winning a major title.

In her run to the French Open title, she defeated very respectable opposition, including Na Li, Maria Kirilenko, and Caroline Wozniacki. She also took the first set off the highly-fancied Elena Dementieva before the Russian inexplicably retired.

Despite this impressive run, it was, undoubtedly, the final where she impressed the most. She wasn't intimidated by the occasion and played a tactically astute game. For nearly the entire duration of the match, Schiavone had Stosur on the run and never let the Australian play her game.

Schiavone imposed herself on Stosur at any opportunity, often returning very aggressively during Stosur's service games. Schiavone employed this tactic early on in Stosur's service games in order to lay down her marker for the rest of the game, thus forcing Stosur to try and do a little bit extra with her serve.

Schiavone's tactics were superb; her aggression was well-tempered and fruitful; and having played exceptionally well in the second set tie-break, she became the deserved winner.

The future for the game's newest major winner is uncertain. She turns 30 on the third day of Wimbledon, so time isn't on her side, but, then again, it wasn't two weeks ago, either.

Her game has always been solid and quite unspectacular, despite possessing one of the most elegant backhands in the game. In fact, her backhand slice is a weapon she uses extremely well when she is about to approach the net. She often gets good spin on a ball that lands inches from the baseline and in the women's game, there may be nobody better at that type of shot.

Clay is certainly Schiavone's favorite surface, so the transition onto grass and hard courts will not fill her with too much excitement. Last year, however, she did reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, despite her previous best result there being the third-round.

Her game may not suit the surfaces that the Tour hits next, but her French Open victory must surely give her added confidence and belief, as well as now being ranked No. 6 in the world, which should, in theory, give her a more favorable draw.

It would be easy to predict that Schiavone will slip back into the realms of mediocrity and third and fourth-round exits will be commonplace, but, two weeks ago, it was easy to predict a mediocre performance by her at this year's French Open.

What's Next For Samantha Stosur?

Stosur went into the final as favorite, a tag that she hadn't had earlier in the tournament when playing the likes of Henin and Williams. Perhaps, that weight of expectation proved too much for her. Nevertheless, she was out-played and out-classed on the day. It's as simple as that.

Mentally she may never recover, but she would do well to remember that she defeated Williams, Henin and Jelena Jankovic en route to the final, all of whom have occupied the world's No. 1 spot.

On her best day, she can beat anyone, especially given that she possesses one of the best forehands in women's tennis. Her forehand hit with heavy topspin causes problems for pretty much anyone on the WTA Tour. Coupled with this is a very good kick serve, which, similar to her forehand, many of the players struggle to cope with.

Historically, the Australian hasn't performed on grass. She has never been further than the third-round at Wimbledon, though one would expect her game to produce better results on the grass. Stosur has had a very successful doubles career, winning four major titles, and has developed a good serve-and-volley game that could be utilized on the grass, but perhaps her failure on the surface has more to do with the development of the game rather than her inability to execute a solid game plan.

Stosur's best chance of winning a Slam on her own may have gone, but at 26-years-old, she still has time to make an impact according to Schiavone, who is more than qualified to judge.

... And What About the Women's Game?

The women's final was being chastised by journalists before a ball had even been hit. Mark Hodgkinson, a journalist for The Telegraph in the UK, claimed that the final was a "TV turn-off" because of a lack of big-name players. Sadly, he was probably right. It would be naïve to think that this final ranked highly in terms of TV ratings.

Those that did watch the match, in spite of the "superstars" not being present, were treated to a great display of tennis. The women's game has been stagnant for some time now with the prize often going to the most powerful. Well, Schiavone and Stosur proved that the women are more than capable of playing a cerebral match with variety and an abundance of delightful winners.

And above all else, the 2010 French Open may be best remembered for demonstrating the unpredictability of the women's game, something which many tennis fans will embrace with open arms.

LOW COST AIRLINES

In lieu of offering a whole college course on budget airlines (oh, the things we could talk about!)here's a quick recap of our thoughts on low-cost carriers.

Personal Experience

Over the past decade, we have come to deeply appreciate European low-cost carriers. We've booked budget flights to jet off from western Europe to eastern Europe, from the Mediterranean to the Nordic lands, and on short-haul jaunts as well as longer journeys.

Recognizing that the budget air revolution has completely changed tourism in Europe, we decided to create a low-cost carrier overview for EuroCheapo.

And so, in late 2005, we went live with a profile of some of Europe's largest and most durable low-cost carriers: Aer Lingus, Air Berlin, easyJet, Fly Nordic, Germanwings, Ryanair, SkyEurope, and Transavia, along with full route information for these airlines.

The Big Idea

So, you might be asking, 'What's the big deal with European budget airlines?'

Put plainly, low-cost flights have dramatically changed the way people get around Europe. For tourists, they allow great flexibility in moving from one point to another; for weekend break tourists they render short visits from hometown to London, Valencia, Krakow, or Riga (among hundreds of other destinations) dramatically more affordable; for citizens of (mostly) eastern European countries following the 2004 enlargement of the EU, they make the prospect of working abroad financially conceivable.

Though the environmental impact of low-cost carriers gives us pause the low-cost revolution has utterly altered the way that we travel in Europe, and we don't see things changing anytime soon.

There are pros and cons to low-cost airline travel, and we'll admit to being partial to trains and rural buses for the atmospheric journeys they foster, but on balance we are fans of the low-cost revolution. Especially for travelers who can remain flexible, budget airlines represent an affordable and quick means of getting around Europe, both for residents and tourists alike.

FORMAL APOLOGY AMONG DEMAND AS AIR INDIA INQUIRY ENDS

Families of those killed in the 1985 Air India bombing want a formal apology from the federal government, their lawyers said Friday as the public inquiry wrapped up after 18 months.

Flight 182 went down in the Atlantic Ocean near Ireland on June 23, 1985, killing all 329 people, many of them Canadians.

Lawyers for the victims' families say a formal apology from the prime minister is warranted, given the litany of intelligence, policing and regulatory failures surrounding the worst mass murder in Canadian history.

"The government not only failed to protect [the families'] loved ones, it also failed to successfully investigate and prosecute those responsible for this heinous crime," Jacques Shore, a lawyer for victims' families, said in his written submission.

The suggestion came as lawyers made their closing arguments Friday morning before former Supreme Court justice John Major, who heads the inquiry.

No date has been set for the release of Major's final report, which will recommend changes to ensure a similar tragedy doesn't happen, but it is expected before the end of the year.

On Friday, lawyers also suggested Ottawa reassess monetary compensation for victims' families, even though it's not technically part of the inquiry's mandate.

CSIS, RCMP communication a key concern

The families are also demanding better co-operation between Canada's intelligence agency and its national police force, an issue that surfaced throughout the inquiry.

They want an office independent of the RCMP and CSIS to be set up for the co-ordination of national security. CSIS should also be forced to share intelligence information, the families say.

Families also want Major to address their concern about broad disclosure laws that force the RCMP to reveal sources during criminal prosecutions.

The families have suggested a legislative exemption be created so that CSIS can share information without fear sources might be disclosed later in court.

A lawyer for the families, Jacques Shore, also accused the government of failing to take the threat of Sikh terrorism seriously before the crash.

He said CSIS did not inform the now defunct airline, Canadian Pacific, of threats to Air India. Also, "understaffed and poorly trained" RCMP failed to pass on crucial information to CSIS about such a possibility, said Shore.

Changes to mega-trials

Another key issue, one that Major is expected to discuss in his report, is whether there should be changes made to so-called mega-trials, prosecutions involving multiple accused or complex evidence.

Inderjit Singh Reyat was the only man ever convicted in the case after he pleaded guilty to manslaughter in 2003.

Suspected ringleader Talwinder Singh Parmar died in India in 1991, and the RCMP's two main surviving suspects were both acquitted in March 2005 after a 19-month trial.

B.C. Supreme Court Justice Ian Josephson ruled that the Crown's case against the two was too weak for a conviction.

After the Air India trial, Josephson commented at a lecture that he would have been more comfortable if the burden of the massive trial had been shared with a jury.

To that effect, the families are calling for future mega-trials to be overseen either by a three-judge panel or, if not enough judges can be found, a court composed of both a judge and jury.

Also among the suggestions by the families was that the Criminal Code be changed to make it an offence to glorify terrorist activity and that non-profit organizations come under closer scrutiny to thwart terrorist financing.

Inquiry a 'long road'

Federal lawyer Barney Brucker briefly addressed the hearing, saying it's been a "long road."

"You have a considerable task ahead of you," Brucker said the commission head. "The government will seriously consider your recommendation in every regard."

At the end of Friday's hearing, Major said it was worth noting that despite granting a former prime suspect in the bombing limited intervener status at his request, the inquiry never heard from him.

"There has been only silence and people can draw whatever inference they like from [Ripudaman Singh Malik's] failure to appear as he requested to do," said Major.

Of the passengers killed aboard Flight 182, 280 were Canadian citizens and 82 were children.

A separate luggage bomb destined for a second Air India flight killed two Japanese baggage handlers at Tokyo's Narita airport.
